Overview

Stratford-upon-Avon is, of course, famous for being the birthplace of William Shakespeare. It was here that the bard grew up and got married before moving to London and finding fame as a playwright. Incredibly, were Shakespeare to return to the town today, he would recognise many of the streets and buildings as they were there in his time.

A great place to hop off first to start exploring is the Market Square. Here you can see the William Shakespeare Memorial Fountain, or the American Fountain, which was a gift to the city from an American businessman. Interestingly, Bram Stoker, the author of ‘Dracula’ was present at its inauguration.

To get more of the Shakespeare vibe, hop off at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre on the banks of the Avon. This theatre is the city’s home to the Royal Shakespeare Company, the world’s leading performers of the Bard’s works. While there, take a stroll along the banks of the river and visit the Church of the Holy Trinity, where Shakespeare was baptised and is buried.

For even more of the world’s most famous playwright, hop off at Shakespeare’s birthplace. This charming Tudor house is where William was born and grew up and also where his father worked. Today, it’s part of the Shakespeare Centre, which is dedicated to the study of the writer’s works. The house stands in the historic centre of the town, so it’s a great area to explore, where you can enjoy the atmosphere of its medieval streets.

A little further afield is the Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. Hop off here to see this impressive Tudor farmhouse, which was the childhood home of Shakespeare’s wife. There is so much more in Stratford for you to discover so choose this 24-hour ticket and start exploring or why not upgrade to our 48-hour ticket.
